International Prize for Arabic Fiction

الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية

United Arab Emirates · Since 2008 · For books in Arabic

Awarded each spring in Abu Dhabi to a novel written in Arabic, open to authors from any country; publishers submit the books, and a jury picks a longlist, a shortlist and the winner.

Often called the Arabic Booker, the prize grew out of the idea of a Booker-style award for Arabic novels that would also lead to more translations. It was set up with advice from the Booker Prize Foundation in London and first funded by the Emirates Foundation in Abu Dhabi; today Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism funds it. Publishers submit novels first published in Arabic in the past year by living authors, and a jury that changes every year, always with one non-Arab specialist, names a longlist, then a shortlist, then the winner. Each shortlisted author receives 10,000 US dollars and the winner a further 50,000. The first prize, in 2008, went to Bahaa Taher's Sunset Oasis; in 2011 the judges shared it between two novels. Since 2009 it has also run a workshop, the Nadwa, for young Arab writers.
