In Amman, Joumane Badran and Nasser al-Amiri, son of a Palestinian economist and a Syrian mother, discover that their grandfathers once lived next door to each other in Aleppo. Memories of 1980s Syria draw them into a mature love, while other characters, from the late nineteenth century to today, show how wars in Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Serbia and Vietnam remake ideas of identity and home.
