The Secrets of Folder 42

Two stories run in parallel. Christine Macmillan, a successful American novelist, joins Rachid Bennacer, a young Moroccan researcher, to find who wrote an obscure Moroccan novel of 1989 in which her father Steve, stationed at an American base in Morocco in the war years and after, is a character. The trail leads to the 1959 scandal of toxic cooking oil. Meanwhile Zouhair Belkacem, a rich and idle teenager, rapes the family's underage maid, and his mother, a lawyer, buries the case and sends him to study in Russia.
