In 2000 Majd works for a video game company from an office ninety-nine floors above New York. Born a Palestinian in exile, he has never seen his homeland, but his body bears the mark of the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre, in which his pregnant mother was killed; his father, once an UNRWA teacher, became a fighter and later sold flowers in Harlem. Majd loves Hilda, who dances for a living and comes from a feudal Christian family that held power alongside the Christian right during the civil war. When she resolves to go home to her mountain village and face her past, he is torn between the enemy he grew up imagining and the dread of losing her.
