In the middle of a wretched neighbourhood of Jeddah stands a vast, mysterious palace, and a man who grew up in its alleys confesses the years he has spent serving its immensely rich owner. His task is a special one: he punishes his master's enemies, apparently rivals in business, by raping them while cameras record every moment. The palace is a stage for corruption and decay, visited by crooked businessmen, prostitutes and damaged people hired for its dirty work. Through them the novel gives a voice to the poor and broken figures who rarely appear in the image of a wealthy, conservative society, and lifts the luxurious carpets to show what has been swept beneath them.
