Fleeing the war, Lamis reaches Cologne and Nicholas, the Munich professor who will sponsor her studies: the man who, while tracing the astronomer al-Battani in 1980s Raqqa, fell for her mother Najwa and became her enemy. Through Lamis, now in her thirties, three generations of women tell a century of the region's history.
