Built like a concerto in four movements, each resting on two characters, the novel follows several Palestinian lives that finally converge. Julie, daughter of an Armenian woman who made her life in England, carries part of her mother's ashes from London to Palestine with her husband Walid Dahman. Their journey leads through the old lanes of Jerusalem, the alleys of Acre and the refugee camps, and Walid walks through a Holocaust museum. Other movements turn to Palestinians who stayed inside the Green Line and live with an Israeli citizenship forced on them, and to exiles trying, one by one, to return. A woman named Janin writes a novel of her own, and the author appears under his own name, as the stories gather around the Nakba, the Holocaust and the right of return.
