Aziz, an air force pilot, lives for flying. On his wedding night his mind is on his plane, not on Zina, his sixteen-year-old bride in the next room; he sits up in uniform and walks out at daybreak. Zina, whose own family has fallen apart, later works with her sister Khatima in a bar in Azrou, and for nearly twenty years goes from prison to prison and office to office, through forests and towns, chasing broken promises and never doubting he is alive. Then a stranger tucks a note into her pocket, and she sets out on a final trip south to the Glaoui kasbah where he is locked up. The novel is a testimony to Morocco's years of lead.
