Hani Mahfouz is invented, but his story draws on the dozens of men rounded up in Cairo in 2001 in the Queen Boat case, whose sentences ranged from acquittal to prison. Acquitted yet shattered, and struck mute during the trial, he begins a long recovery in which daily writing is his only help.
