Masouda al-Qarih, a mother of three, lives through two pitiless eras in Algeria: French colonial rule and the years after independence. In the middle of the fight against France she resists, with rare courage, an attack by a traitor who poses as a resistance fighter; he then tells the village that the rebels executed her husband on discovering he was a traitor. Once the country is free, the rumour makes her an outcast and drives her from the village, and rising Islamist extremists murder her son Abdelkader. Masouda does not give in. When her other son, Idris, suddenly comes back to avenge his brother, the book sets the revolution's betrayers beside those who later betrayed the free nation, as two of a kind.
