Through the history of a single Palestinian village and three generations of one family in it, this epic novel covers Palestine from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to 1948. Under Ottoman rule and then the British Mandate, the village's peasants struggle against rural and urban notables, Turkish and British rulers, Jewish immigrants and Arab leaders alike. Yet they also live full lives, rich in customs and detail, in noise and tension, celebrations, tragedies and sorrows, on land that has been theirs for generations. Their story becomes that of a whole people, from the Ottoman centuries to the Nakba.
