Scrolls written in Syriac in the fifth century and buried near the ruins around the citadel of Saint Simeon, outside Aleppo, hold the confessions of Hypa, an Egyptian monk. Urged by Azazeel, the devil who speaks from inside him, Hypa tells how he left Akhmim in Upper Egypt for Alexandria to study medicine and theology; how a pagan woman, Octavia, loved him and then drove him away when she learned he was a monk; and how he saw a Christian mob kill the pagan scholar Hypatia. He moves on to Jerusalem, where the priest Nestorius takes to him and sends him to a quiet monastery near Antioch. There, as the great churches quarrel over the nature of Christ, his doubts about the faith grow, and he falls in love with a woman named Martha.
