At the end of the twentieth century Algeria and Bosnia, once bound by friendship and a shared ideology, both fall into civil wars that tear people apart over religion and ethnicity. Salim and Ivana each escape the killing and hatred in their own country and look for another life in Slovenia. Through them the novel sets the two wars side by side and shows how the war stays with them in exile.
