The love between the young master Muhammad and the slave Ta'wida breaks the rules of masters who keep slave women only as concubines. While his father sends him away to trade, his family moves to end the pregnancy and marry her off, and on his return Muhammad goes looking for her. The novel exposes a silenced chapter of slavery in Libya whose marks are still visible.
