Hamouda, an innocent man, is seized and taken to a jail in an unknown place where Arabs and foreigners alike interrogate and torture him. Put to work cleaning up after the other prisoners, he receives advice: if he cannot become his captors' spy or hired killer, he should play the madman and the invalid, baffle them with nonsense and threaten them with his cough, until they give up on him.
