Murad was found as a baby in Ighram, an Amazigh mountain village, and grew up there as a foundling, insulted and beaten by the villagers. Now a left-wing intellectual and university lecturer who has written against the Islamist groups that threaten him, he looks back on the women he has loved as if to settle a score with fate: Khawla, who became pregnant by him; Nidal, his fellow student and comrade in political struggle; Julia, the Frenchwoman who quietly asks about everything in the village; and last of all Numidya, a mute Amazigh woman. It is Julia who writes his story, which opens onto the history, politics and religion of modern Morocco.
