In a village in the Egyptian countryside, hunger never lets up. The Zaghloul family lives forgotten at the bottom of society, and each day turns on the search for food. Their son Zaher lingers at the village bakery, eyeing the broken and burnt loaves left over from the baking, until the baker tells him he can fill his lap with them if he sweeps out the oven. Told in a detached, camera-like style through scenes of daily life, the novel shows hunger of the body and of the mind, and people who, among poverty, illness and superstition, still look hard at their lives and ask questions about them.
