Josephine, a Filipina, gives up her studies to work as a maid for a Kuwaiti family, and secretly marries Rashid, the indulged son of the house. Once she is pregnant he abandons her, and their baby José is sent to the Philippines. Growing up poor there, José waits for the age of eighteen, when he means to reach Kuwait, the paradise of his mother's stories.
