Egypt, early in the twentieth century. At the country's biggest racecourse, where kings and pashas gather, four strangers' lives become tangled: Fawzan, a poor Bedouin boy pushed into riding in a race; an Englishwoman who buys the horse and sees her dead son in him; a dealer who handles bets and sales; and a policeman on a pension who gambles on horses hoping to cover the cost of his ailing wife's care. When the horse wins against all odds, adventures and quarrels follow, ambitions clash, and love, desire and a guilty conscience tug at each of them as they cling to their fragile hopes.
