After the civil war of 1860 on Mount Lebanon, the Ottomans punish hundreds of Druze fighters with exile. One morning Hanna Yaqub, a Christian who sells eggs in Beirut, happens to walk to the harbour just as the prisoners wait for the ships. Suleiman Izz al-Din has been released in exchange for two jars of gold, and Hanna is forced into his place to make up the number. Taken from his wife Helena and their only daughter Barbara, he sails with Suleiman's four brothers to the fortress of Belgrade at the edge of the empire. In the troubled Balkans the exiles try to stay alive through years of hunger, thirst, darkness and cold, with death all around them.
