Rose lives in Shindagha, Dubai's oldest quarter, in the 1960s. After her mother dies, her uncle will not let her join her classmates on a scholarship to study literature in Damascus. A keen reader and gifted writer, she fills secret diaries with stories and questions drawn from local history and customs, then throws each into the creek.
