Not yet twenty, Khamila, daughter of an Italian mother and a rich father, comes home from Egypt to the mixed town of al-Sur. A group called Remembrance and History, first known by its graffiti, declares war on unbelievers and takes the town; its women become spoils for the leaders of the new religious order, and Khamila, renamed Na'na'a, is set aside as a bride for one of them.
