Notebooks spanning 1947 to 2019 tell of people who lose their homes or never learn who their parents were. At their centre is Ibrahim, a bookseller who reads so avidly that characters from novels take him over. Loneliness and a harsh world drive him into schizophrenia and a suicide attempt, before he meets a woman who changes his life.
