Aqila, a well-known eye surgeon, and her husband, who runs a hospital mortuary, take corneas from corpses and sell them through her practice. After he is killed she is questioned as a suspect, and the truth about their marriage comes out. Across town, veterans of the independence war beg to be cleared of a made-up charge of working for the French. The two stories slowly meet, and with them fifty years of Algeria, from 1939 to the early 1990s: a mother who prepared poisons for the fighters, a father branded with a scar like a mark of guilt.
