Adam Dannoun, a Palestinian who has long lived in New York, sets out to write a novel about the poet Waddah al-Yaman, who chose silence to protect the woman he loved. He abandons it for his own story. He was a baby in Lydda when the city fell in 1948 and most of its people were expelled; his mother stayed behind with him. Theirs is the story of the Palestinian ghetto that the army set up in the town and fenced with barbed wire, of those who stayed and survived, and of the attempt to read the silence of the victims. Stories open inside other stories, mixing memoir, memory and history.
