Booker Prize

United Kingdom · Since 1969 · For books in English

Awarded each autumn by the Booker Prize Foundation in London to the best novel written in English and published in the UK or Ireland. Until 2013 it was open to Commonwealth, Irish and Zimbabwean authors; since 2014, to writers of any nationality.

The prize was founded in 1969 as the Booker Prize for Fiction, sponsored by the trading company Booker McConnell; from 2002 the Booker Prize Foundation ran it with the investment firm Man Group as sponsor, as the Man Booker Prize, and since 2019 it has been funded by Crankstart and carries the Booker name alone. A panel of five judges, appointed each year, chooses a longlist of about a dozen books, then a shortlist of six and the winner, announced at a ceremony in London in the autumn. The winner receives £50,000 and each shortlisted author £2,500. Only novels by Commonwealth, Irish, South African and later Zimbabwean citizens could win until 2014, when the prize opened to any novel written in English, a change that proved controversial. The rules require a single winner, but the 2019 judges split the prize between Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo.
