Nazneen, a devout village girl who has learned from her mother to accept fate, is married at eighteen to Chanu, a well-meaning, long-winded and unlucky man twenty years older, and taken to a flat on a council estate in London's East End. Unable to speak English and told not to go out alone, she lives through her husband, the neighbours and her sister's letters from Bangladesh. Her first child dies; two daughters follow, and the elder defies Chanu at every turn. When Chanu falls into debt to a moneylender, Nazneen takes in sewing and meets the middleman Karim, a young radical, against a background of growing racial tension, and slowly begins to take charge of her own life.
