Ethiopia, 1935: Italy is about to invade, and Emperor Haile Selassie's commanders hurry to gather their strongest men. Hirut, an orphan working as a maid, is drawn into a world of theft, violation and betrayal, and into growing anger. She and the women around her are expected only to nurse the injured and bury those who fall, but they want more. When the emperor leaves for exile, Hirut has an idea to keep up morale: a peasant is dressed as Haile Selassie, and she becomes his guard, which inspires more women to join the fighting. The novel restores the women soldiers whom history forgot.
