Bernie Sellers has a new job with the Electricity Board, so in 1974 he, his wife Alice and their children move from London to Sheffield. That same day the house opposite is in turmoil: Malcolm Glover has vanished, sure that his wife Katherine is unfaithful, though he soon returns. Katherine confides in Alice, and over the next two decades the two families' lives grow entangled, through the parents' marriages and through the children. Ten-year-old Tim Glover is marked for years by an instance of public cruelty from his mother and by the mocking of fifteen-year-old Sandra Sellers. Around them the North changes from mines and factories to shops and services, and the 1984 miners' strike reaches into both homes.
