Tripoli, summer 1979. Suleiman, nine, spends his days in childhood routines: trips to the ancient ruins near the city, games with friends in the blazing heat, presents his father brings back from frequent trips abroad. At night he keeps his mother company as she tells him bitter, disturbing stories from the family's past. One day in the market he spots his father, in dark glasses, across the square at a time when he should be away. What is he doing there, and why the lie? Suleiman is drawn into a world beyond his understanding: a ringing phone signals danger, his mother burns his father's beloved books, a stranger waits outside in a car all day, and the father of his closest friend disappears, only to be shown under interrogation on state television.
