In 1949 Teoh Yun Ling, trained in law and the only person to come out alive from a cruel Japanese wartime camp, carries its scars to the Cameron Highlands in search of peace. Among the estates lies Yugiri, Malaya's one Japanese garden, made by the reclusive Aritomo, who once tended the gardens of the Emperor of Japan. She asks him to create a garden in memory of her sister, whom the Japanese killed; instead he offers to teach her until she can make it herself. As she learns his craft in a land still marked by war, she must confront her own past and the hidden history of her country, while the surrounding jungle keeps its own hidden stories.
