High in the north-east Himalayas, under Kanchenjunga, an embittered retired judge shares a remote, decaying house with his cook and wants only to be left in peace, still tormented by what he once did and was. His orphaned granddaughter Sai comes to live there and loses her heart to her tutor, though they come from different worlds and believe different things. The cook's thoughts, meanwhile, are on his son, who moves from one New York restaurant kitchen to another among migrants from across the globe, staying just out of reach of the immigration officials and looking for a place to belong. Around the house, unrest and insurgency build, setting past against present and nationalism and love at odds.
