Rosemary Cooke, a student at the University of California, Davis, begins halfway through, for reasons of her own. As a small child in Indiana she talked without pause, until an event she will not name at first silenced her. Her father, a professor of psychology, and her mother raised a chimpanzee, Fern, with her for a research project, and Rosemary loved Fern as her twin. Fern's removal broke the family apart: her mother fell into depression, her father into drink, and her older brother Lowell ran away and is now sought by the FBI. A reckless friendship with a fellow student, Harlow, lands Rosemary in jail, and as she tells what happened she weighs family, memory and what it means to be human.
