Barbados, 1830. George Washington Black, eleven years old and enslaved in the cane fields of a sugar plantation owned by the brutal Erasmus Wilde, is picked to serve Erasmus's brother Christopher, known as Titch, a naturalist, explorer, inventor and abolitionist who is building an airship he calls the Cloud-cutter. Titch teaches the boy to read and encourages his gift for drawing and science, while Erasmus grows ever harsher towards him. When Wash's life is put in danger, the two flee Barbados side by side, setting out on a journey that takes them to Virginia and as far north as the Arctic. Then Titch disappears, and Wash must make his own way, pursuing his scientific work while trying to learn what became of his mentor.
