The narrator grows up in Dickens, a farming district on the edge of Los Angeles that is also a ghetto, where his sociologist father makes him the subject of experiments on race. When his father is gunned down from a passing car, the memoir meant to save their finances proves never to have existed, and soon Dickens disappears from the map altogether. Resolved to restore it, he takes on Hominy, an old former child actor from the Little Rascals who insists on being his slave, and begins segregating the local school. The book opens with him facing the Supreme Court and looks back at how he got there, in a satire on race and identity in America.
