The Whitshanks' Baltimore house, with its wide porch, was built by Red's father, Junior, for another family, and has drawn the family back for decades. Abby, who always tells of the summer afternoon in 1959 when she fell for Red, is having spells of forgetfulness, and Red is ageing too. Their youngest son, Stem, moves back in with his wife, Nora, to care for them, to the resentment of the eldest, Denny, who drifts in and out of the family's life and cannot commit to anything. The story then turns back to Junior and his wife, Linnie, newcomers to Baltimore in the 1920s, and to the jealousies, disappointments and guarded secrets beneath a family that seems so special.
