As boys in Tollygunge, Calcutta, Subhash and Udayan Mitra are so close that neighbours mistake one for the other, yet their paths split. In the late 1960s the impulsive Udayan throws himself into the Naxalite uprising against poverty and injustice, while the careful Subhash goes to Rhode Island for graduate study. Udayan marries Gauri, a student of philosophy he meets through her brother. When a letter tells Subhash of Udayan's fate near the family home, he returns to India and finds Gauri pregnant and scorned by his parents. The decisions he and Gauri make then shape their lives, and the life of her child, over decades and two continents.
