Darling is ten. With her friends Bastard, Chipo, Godknows, Sbho and Stina she lives in a Zimbabwean shanty called Paradise, after paramilitary police destroyed their real homes. Before, there were proper houses with furniture, a school that was open, and fathers who had not yet gone abroad for dangerous jobs; now the children steal guavas, play games and scheme to rid Chipo, still a child herself, of the baby she is carrying, dreaming of other paradises such as America, Dubai or Europe. Darling's aunt lives in America, and her chance to leave comes. In the land of famous abundance, though, she finds that the choices open to an immigrant are few.
