Twelve people, mostly women and mostly Black, make their lives in Britain across a century. At the centre is Amma, a London playwright whose play is about to open at the National Theatre after decades of insecure work and radical theatre. Around her are her daughter Yazz, a student whose university friends unsettle her views on privilege and race; her oldest friend Shirley, a weary teacher; Shirley's former pupil Carole, now a banker, and Carole's mother Bummi, a Nigerian cleaner; Morgan, who is non-binary and works on the family farm in the north of England; and Morgan's great-grandmother Hattie, in her nineties and keeping family secrets. Their chapters cross classes and generations, back to the 1920s, and meet at the party after Amma's premiere.
