Over three journeys, through Greece, India and Africa, a young man travels light and without plans. His companions change each time: an attractive and puzzling stranger, a band of thoughtless young travellers, a woman near collapse. With each of them he plays a different part, follower, lover or guardian, and despite meaning well he sees every journey end in disaster. Taken together, the journeys transform his life.
