London, 1857. Running down an East End street, eight-year-old Jaffy Brown, a child of the slums, finds himself face to face with a tiger that has got loose, and is snatched from its jaws by Mr Jamrach, an explorer and businessman who trades in the world's strangest animals. The encounter transforms his prospects. Before long Jaffy has said farewell to Ishbel, the girl he loves, and has sailed with his friend Tim for the Dutch East Indies, sent by Jamrach on a peculiar commission. What follows at sea will test their beliefs, their loves and their loyalty to each other to the limit.
