Nariman Vakeel, a retired professor of seventy-nine with Parkinson's disease, lives with his stepchildren Coomy and Jal in their roomy Bombay flat in the ironically named Chateau Felicity. When he breaks his ankle they refuse to nurse him and move him to the cramped home of his own daughter, Roxana, who lives there with Yezad and their boys. Roxana bears the new burden patiently, while Yezad, desperate to give his family more, is tempted towards gambling and crooked schemes, and their elder son learns to exploit his position at school. In flashbacks Nariman relives the error that shaped his life: giving up the Catholic woman he loved to marry, under family pressure, a Parsi widow.
