Sam DuChamp, a writer of spy thrillers whose own son is missing, invents a hero: Quichotte, an ageing travelling salesman for a pharmaceutical company who has watched so much television that he becomes infatuated with a star, Miss Salma R., and takes to the road across the United States to win her. With him goes Sancho, a son he has imagined into existence. On the way they meet bigotry, the opioid trade and violence, as well as a talking cricket and strange signs that the world may be ending, from people turning into mastodons to rips in the sky. Alongside their quest runs the writer's own story of fathers and sons and quarrelling siblings, and the two journeys begin to mirror each other.
