U. made his name with a study of club culture and now works as the in-house ethnographer of a consulting firm he calls the Company. His boss, Peyman, has charged him with the Great Report, a document meant to capture the whole era, but U. cannot begin it and is not even sure he is working on it. Instead he spends his days compiling dossiers on oil spills, parachute accidents and the other images that flood in, hunting for a hidden logic that might join them, while his friend Petr is ill with cancer. Then a dream of a ruined cityscape jolts him. The book takes the form of his report, addressed to the reader, and its reflections take the place of a plot.
