As dusk falls in a Lahore café, Changez starts talking to a nervous American he has offered to help, and keeps talking into the night. He tells how he graduated near the top of his class at Princeton, was hired by an elite New York firm and thrived on the work, and how he fell for Erica, a fellow graduate who cannot get over the boyfriend she lost, whose world promised him the social standing his family once had in Lahore. Then came the attacks of September 11. In their wake he felt suspicion settle on him in a city he loved, let his beard grow, watched Erica retreat into her past and began to question where his loyalties lay. All the while, the stranger's unease grows.
