Reta Winters has a long partnership with the doctor Tom Winters, three daughters, good friends and a modest name as a writer of light comic fiction. In the spring of 2000 her eldest, Norah, abandons university and her boyfriend to sit silently on a Toronto street corner, wearing a sign that says only 'Goodness'. Grieving, Reta begins a sequel to her novel and tries to work out why her daughter has withdrawn. Her search becomes a funny, angry meditation on women's place in the world: she writes letters, never sent, to commentators who ignore women's work, and spars with her bombastic New York editor, who has his own plans for her book.
