February 1862. Eleven-year-old Willie Lincoln has died and been placed in a stone crypt in a cemetery in Georgetown, and that night his grieving father, the president, comes back alone to the graveyard. Willie's spirit lingers in a state between death and what follows, the bardo, among a chorus of ghosts who refuse to accept that they are dead. Lincoln's visit stirs them, and two of them, the young Roger Bevins III and the printer Hans Vollman, set out to save the boy from staying among them. Their voices alternate with fragments taken from memoirs and histories of the period, building a picture of a president at war, weighed down by private grief as news from the battlefields tests him and the country.
