Christopher Banks spent his first years in Shanghai's International Settlement, where his father worked for a trading company invested in opium and his mother spoke out against the trade. Before he was ten, both parents disappeared, one after the other, and he was sent to relatives in England. Twenty years on he is a famous detective in London society, yet his skills have never explained their supposed kidnapping. In 1937 he goes back to Shanghai, convinced he can find them. But Japanese forces are tearing the city apart, old acquaintances seem strangely altered, and he finds he can trust his own memories no more than the strangers he meets as he presses on into the fighting.
