Broke and without acting work, the narrator agrees to help Dr Blend, a psychology professor, with an experiment: for a whole autumn term he will sit silently in the last row of a lecture theatre, sealed inside a huge leather bag, so that Blend can study the students' reactions. He takes to the part eagerly, but it sets off effects nobody expected. Another academic, who works on post-humanism, begins an investigation of her own into whether a person in a bag can be loved, and the man he grew up with and now shares a flat with sees a business opportunity in the whole affair.
