Thirteen young men share a house in Sheffield, all of them in flight from India. Tarlochan once drove a rickshaw and keeps silent about Bihar. Avtar, who sold a kidney and took on a ruinous loan to pay for a student visa, is tied by something he hides to the volatile Randeep, who came on a marriage visa to earn money after his father's breakdown. Randeep's wife, Narinder, a devout Sikh born in London, keeps his clothes in her wardrobe across town in case immigration officers call. Moving between their lives in India and one hard year in England, the novel follows their search for work, the debts they owe at home and the uneasy bonds that form between them.
